Summer 2011 RASA Community
They're back!! They have a 'habit' of making us laugh -- who?? You say -- well, it's those crazy Sisters of Hoboken back with song and dance, and convent humor. They figured that their first benefit performance of "Nunsense" was such a hit, that they'd do it again.
"The Second Coming" takes place at the Mount St. Helens school gymnasium six weeks after the benefit performance. This time the school is concurrently presenting The Mikado, but the sister don't let the rickshaw and paper lanterns get in their way.
You needn't have seen the first production to enjoy II. The show opens with a recap of the important events and introduces the characters. There's Sister Robert Anne (Emily Frick) a tough street girl turned nun; Sister Mary Leo (Stephanie Wick) the first nun ballerina; and Sister Mary Amnesia (Jana Petersen)a former country singer who won the Publishers Clearinghouse sweepstakes at the end of Nunsense. Sister Mary Hubert (Kristen Eckern) is a second in command to Sister Mary Cardelias' Mother Superior (P.J. Thompson).
Essentially it is a revue of 20-odd song-and-dance numbers, there's a little plot thrown in to keep things moving. Having tasted the thrill of the stage, the the sisters thirst for stardom with a frenzy that peaks with a rumor of a "Star Search" talent scout in the audience. Meanwhile, trouble looms large as the convent is threatened by a health inspector and a visiting order of Franciscan nuns who come to claim Mary Amnesia and her sweepstakes millions.
Highlights include Stephanie Wick dancing on roller skates, Emily Frick doing impressions known as "Habit Humor" and Jana Petersen with puppet Sister Mary Annette in "the Country Nun."
The one-liners and comic bits come at a frantic pace. The audience-participation bingo game and the home-shopping-takeoff called "The Catholic Guide to Gift-Giving" add to making Nunsense II, The Second Coming a hilarious time for everyone.
